I use my studio space to prepare art pieces for festivals as I also create visionary art pieces and run workshops. I have been blessed to be part of this wonderful cooperative Pop-Up Studios for 12 years now. In the beginning I rented the clinic space where I would facilitate women's empowerment circles to offer a space to create connection and trust within our community.
I am also the Coordinator for Pop-Up Studios and this works well for me as I am able to do it in my own hours which allows me to support my children through the natural way of learning through home education. We often use the garden and Pop-Up Studios and we hope to build on this in the future.
MICHAEL OLDEN
Visual Artist
I am an artist working primarily as a painter, but printing, poetry and puppet making have also been a part of my practice. Pop Up gives me an affordable meditative space in which to paint and think, to be among people similarly embarked on a creative endeavour. I work at Brighton Museum, putting together exhibitions and working with the public but Pop Up is a place I go to unstick from the glue of habit. It gives me an arena to make visible what the everyday has made invisible.
What does Pop Up Studios give to you?
Pop up gives me an affordable space embedded in a community of likeminded people engaged in an explorative creativity that feeds into work, life and extends my relationships with the world community. My space at Pop Up is a valuable resource to me. At times a place of quiet contemplation and at others a beachhead and rallying point for forays into the world.

CHRIS PAUL
Mixed Media Artist
Previously I worked at studios in London and later at the Phoenix gallery, studios, and arts centre in Brighton. I happened to stumble on Pop Up quite by chance about seven years ago and have really valued the space and ambience so close next to the river Ouse ever since. I had exhibited in all Phoenix gallery exhibitions and later the affiliate members shows, the Dupont arts club at the Friends house in Brighton and Dupont at Hove and continuing at several central Brighton venues. Without the facilities of Pop Up the aforementioned in the last seven years would not have been possible, it is such an amazing and wholly unique place to be and create.
I am primarily an artist in mixed media, lino/wood cut printing , stained glass and oils. Secondarily a published poet in 2 books , a CD and yearly X 10 single inclusions in the former United Press calendar diary 2005—2017. Previously these were exhibited at 2 churches in Lewes I had worked with painted glass and leaded glass in the last few years and undertaken stained glass repairs and stained glass installations currently in a Brighton Church. Apart from the maintenance of the said glass works, I then initially worked with oil pastels and am know wholly involved in oil painting.
I was head hunted via the Pop Up Studios website by a south Californian art and design company who have used my past print designs for clothing: ie, dresses, t-shirts and pillow and duvet covers.
What has Pop Up Studios given you?
Pop Up has given me the creative space to work in these last years in wholly as I experience as "a pre-corporate" , ramshackle series of old buildings next to the mysterious and magical river Ouse where overall the vibes are excellent and creative ventures abound". Pop Up has the whole atmosphere of bohemian like creativity in the pre-transformation time before it is either demolished or modernised but hopefully the Pop Up entity will survive and continue albeit in a different location.
I also provide coaching and support to a craft group for elderly, physically disabled and persons with learning difficulties.
